Marina Komkov & David Porter

Both David and Marina are State of Alaska licensed professional architects and graduates of the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, with Masters of Architecture degrees. They moved to Alaska in 2002 “for a year” and have remained here since, making Alaska their home. With a combined 40+ years of experience, David and Marina see each of their projects from the beginning to the end.

David studied biology, chemistry, and multimedia design prior to obtaining his degree in architecture. Raised in the United States and Germany, David brings a deep understanding of what is required to design and construct a facility that performs well and endures in northern climates.

Marina’s design background focused on fine arts until she changed gears to obtain her degree in architecture. Raised in Russia and Israel, Marina applies a creative design aesthetic to resolve project challenges.

Philosophy

We strive to create lasting buildings and environments that engage, elevate, and inspire.

Our designs are formed in response to each unique project challenge.

All projects are impacted by larger environmental and social contexts; oftentimes, solutions to problems come from understanding those settings.

Successful projects are only possible through collaboration of many people, including clients, contractors, and the entire design team.

We believe that a design which resolves the tension between simplicity and complexity, roughness and refinement, boundary and open-endedness, can embed into a built form a felt sense of inner beauty and quiet purposeful intent which may deepen with richness over time.

Testimonials

"We have completed several beautiful projects with Icefall Architecture. Marina and David respond to their client’s needs with creativity and attention to details. We look forward to working with them again."

- Robert Scott, H. Watt & Scott, General Contractors

"We recently finished a commercial remodel project using Icefall Architecture and cannot say enough good things about their professionalism and stick-to-it attitude to finish the job.
The building being constructed in the mid-50s presented many old-building challenges which they were able to resolve. They were very easy to work with and responsive to our questions and requests.
Now we have a piece of property that we’re proud to own. Actually, we as do our neighbors strongly believe it brightens up the area while complimenting other new construction currently being worked on nearby.
All we can say is we whole-heartedly endorse Icefall Architecture."

- Jeff & Gayla Ranf, 2263 Spenard

"We've been getting lots of positive feedback from friends and customers about how great the place looks. Thanks again for all your assistance these last six months! "
